Located on the Colombian Caribbean coast, Cartagena de Indias was founded by the Spanish in 1533 on the site of an ancient Amerindian city called Calamarí. The city quickly became an important port thanks to the ships that brought gold from Peru and Ecuador, which was then transported to Spain. The city flourished because of this, and also because of trade, especially the slave trade.
